DEP 3 Day Notice for Water Main Leak – Quick Guide to Resolving the Leak

If you have received a DEP 3 day  or 10 day notice from the Department of Environmental Protection, it is important to take the necessary steps for a quick resolution, while avoiding any additional violations.

First you must find a licensed master plumber that specializes in sub surface water main installations, this is not going to be your average plumber! There are thousands of plumbers throughout NYC but only a very select group that have the required insurance and bond with DOT to replace leaking water main pipes. It is also important to remember that time is of the essence and you cannot make the common mistake of avoiding the violation paper.

It is understandable that your plumber may not be able to fix the leak the same day you receive the violation however, you should hire the plumber, sign a formal contract and notify DEP that you have a reputable contractor that is working on the permit process. In most cases the city will document that fact you have someone working on the job and will not show up and turn you water off for violating the notice. The only way this would happens is if the leak was creating harm, or danger to your neighborhood.

Quick Tips

  1. It is important to schedule an in home visit for your estimate. It is highly advised not to receive a quote over the phone, this will avoid the possibility of unnecessary cost.
  2. Once you receive your formal quote for review, it is important to choose a licensed plumber and have them notify DEP that your property is under contract.
  3. There is no need to be alarmed if you are following all of the necessary steps that has been suggested by your plumber. 3 day notices are issued around NYC on a daily basis and it is more common than most people are aware of.

The standard copper water main installation will take place over a one day period. The existing water main will be replaced with copper from the city main, to inside the house with a new valve (unless requested otherwise).
